What is Public Health?

Public Health focuses on the overall health of a community, as a whole. It targets issues that affect the general public, or broad subsets of the public.

This could be concerns such as those related to heart disease, cancer screening, diabetes, maternal health, high blood pressure and stroke, HIV/AIDS, and mental health challenges.

Or they could be environmental concerns such as climate change and nationwide food recalls. Or social issues that can affect health such as homelessness or poverty.

What is Community Health?

Officials involved with Community Health are concerned with the health of a specific area, and issues that are regionalized. For example, in certain parts of the country, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever might be more of a concern, or a disease like bubonic plague that is very regional.

Or there may be occasional outbreak of a disease caused by a virus that is very contagious, such as measles.

A condition such as Covid-19 or a seasonal flu would be considered an overall public health threat, but there are often times when it is particularly rampant in certain parts of the country, or within certain sections of a state.

In a case like that, getting messages out to the public would be more of a community health concern.

What is a Public Service Announcement?

A public service announcement (PSA) is a message that goes out to the general public, either nationally or, regionally or locally, to address a health concern. This would usually come from a non-profit organization, such as the Red Cross or American Heart Association, or from either the Federal Government, a state agency or a county or city agency.

As a commercial, either aired on television or the radio, they can be any length, but usually fall into the 60 or 39 second category. In fact, 15 second public service announcements are quite common. They are often used to disseminate information as much as they are used to try to persuade their intended audience with facts and information.
